Why a Mantle Withdrawal Needs MNT and ETH

A Mantle withdrawal spends gas in two places: MNT to start it on Mantle, then ETH to claim it on Ethereum after settlement makes the message ready.

A Mantle withdrawal needs MNT to start on Mantle and ETH to claim the funds on Ethereum. The bridge records the withdrawal in stages: first, a transaction on Mantle creates a message for Ethereum; later, a separate Ethereum transaction completes the claim. Each transaction uses the gas currency of the network where it runs.

This is why a wallet can show the asset you want to withdraw and still lack what it needs to finish. For the cost of moving assets in the other direction, see this explanation of Mantle Bridge deposit gas costs. A withdrawal has its own two-network fee sequence.

Why does a Mantle withdrawal need two gas balances?

The first balance pays for the withdrawal transaction on Mantle; the second pays for the claim transaction on Ethereum. Mantle uses MNT for gas, while Ethereum uses ETH. The token being withdrawn does not replace either network’s gas token.

For example, withdrawing ETH from Mantle still requires MNT to send the withdrawal transaction. When the message is ready to claim, the wallet needs ETH on Ethereum to send that claim. The amount being withdrawn sits in the bridge process; it cannot pay the fee for the transaction that releases it.

Think of it as paying a toll at each end of a crossing. The first toll starts the transfer; the second completes it. One wallet address can hold balances on both networks, but those balances are separate.

What happens between starting and claiming?

The Mantle transaction records a withdrawal message, but it does not immediately put the funds in the Ethereum wallet. The bridge must process the message and make it eligible for finalization before the claim can complete.

That waiting step is part of the transfer, not a second withdrawal. Check the bridge’s withdrawal history or transaction status to see when the original message is ready. Then switch the wallet to Ethereum and submit the claim. If the claim is not ready, sending another withdrawal will not advance the first one.

The precise wait depends on settlement processing. Do not treat the initial Mantle confirmation as proof that the funds have arrived on Ethereum. Arrival follows the claim.

What should you check before withdrawing?

Check both networks and both balances before you start. Leave enough MNT on Mantle for the withdrawal transaction, and keep ETH on Ethereum for the later claim. The amount required varies with network conditions and the work each transaction needs, so use the wallet’s current fee estimate rather than relying on a fixed figure.

  • Confirm the wallet address and that you can access it on both Mantle and Ethereum.
  • Keep MNT on Mantle, even when the asset being withdrawn is ETH or a stablecoin.
  • Keep ETH on Ethereum for the separate claim, including when withdrawing ETH itself.
  • Save the transaction hash and check the withdrawal’s status before claiming.

If you have the asset but no MNT, the withdrawal cannot start. If you have MNT but no ETH on Ethereum, it can start but you may be unable to claim when the message is ready. For most users, the practical choice is to arrange both gas balances before initiating the transfer. The two fees belong to two distinct steps, and the withdrawal is complete only after the Ethereum claim succeeds.
