Coinbase and Marqeta announced a collaboration on Oct. 16 to let Marqeta business customers offer cards funded by stablecoin balances, connecting digital-asset funds to everyday card payments. In Marqeta’s announcement distributed by Business Wire, the companies said Coinbase will custody the stablecoins and convert between digital assets and fiat currency. Base, Coinbase’s blockchain, will provide onchain settlement infrastructure.
What happens when a cardholder pays?
Coinbase holds the stablecoin balance and manages its conversion to fiat; Marqeta issues the card and processes the payment. Marqeta will also manage the bank and card-network relationships. The announcement does not spell out the transaction sequence in further detail, including when conversion occurs relative to payment authorization.
The setup joins two systems: stablecoin custody and settlement on one side, card issuance and merchant payments on the other. A cardholder can use the card at merchants that accept cards, while the business can fund its card program around the clock. The Block’s report on the partnership likewise says Coinbase handles custody and conversion, while Marqeta manages issuing and processing.
What does Base do in the arrangement?
Base provides the onchain infrastructure for settlement, according to the companies. That places blockchain settlement within the payment setup while Marqeta handles card processing and its bank and network relationships. Marqeta and Coinbase described settlement as fast and low-cost, but did not publish a fee schedule or transaction-level detail.
The offer is aimed at Marqeta’s enterprise customers, including crypto-native and traditional businesses. Those businesses will be able to issue cards backed by stablecoin balances, and cardholders will be able to spend from those balances at millions of merchants globally that accept cards, the announcement said.
What is confirmed, and what remains open?
The companies confirmed the roles each will take, but did not specify which stablecoins the cards will support, when the service will launch, or what fees will apply. Those details will matter to businesses assessing how the product fits their payment programs.
The partnership expands an existing relationship: Marqeta already issues crypto-backed cards for Coinbase. The new collaboration extends the arrangement to Marqeta’s business customers and stablecoin-funded card programs. Its practical proposition is to let businesses connect stablecoin balances to familiar card acceptance while Coinbase and Marqeta divide custody, conversion, settlement, issuance and processing across their respective systems.
